Once you receive the SubJob quest from either Selbina or Mhaura, you cannot go to the other town and attempt to do that quest. Be absolutely certain you want to do the quest in the town that you are in before talking to the NPC that enables that quest. Those NPC's are Isacio and Vera, from Selbina and Mhaura respectively.
The Red Mage is a character class that delves in the art of Black and White magic. This may seem a unbalanced class, especially once you consider that he can fight with weapons much better than Specialty Mages, yet he isn't, the reason for this is that he gets most of his spells at a higher level then Specialty Mages, and some spells he never gets.
Talk to Balasiel to start A Squire's Test. He wants you to get him a Revival Tree Root. This item drops off of various undead enemies. Best place to go would be to go to King Ranperre's Tomb and fight Spooks until it drops. Or... You could just get one at the AH. They sell for around 200 gil, under the Materials -> Alchemy section. Go back to Balasiel, trade him the tree root, and you will have completed the first quest. He gives you a Spatha for your troubles.
